I graduated from the University of Florida in 1974 with a degree in Anthropology. (Phi Beta Kappa, Summa Cum Laude, Departmental Honors). My professional art career started in 1980, currently working in Sculpture and Mixed Media.

Wabi-Sabi is an ancient Japanese aesthetic finding reverence in an uncomplicated sense of beauty, 

Wabi - is about finding richness in the ordinary and peace in the simple, reminding you that life does not need to be extravagant to be meaningful.

Sabi - teaches the quiet acceptance that nothing stays the same, and the gentle passage of time itself is beautiful.

Wabi-Sabi emphasizes that imperfections add depth and character, it stresses the authentic over the artificial and invites you to discover beauty in unexpected places.

Reflecting on works of Wabi-Sabi, you become less materialistic, more grateful for the little things in life, more satisfied with what you have as it invites you to live in harmony here and now.

The essence of Wabi-Sabi helps you to live a happier life as it reminds you that true beauty often lies in what is modest, natural, and real. 

Sculpture

I studied many ancient cultural belief systems while getting my degree in Anthropology and as you know, for whatever reasons, certain things just 'speak to you'.  My sculpture work is a marriage between my love of creating art and my affinity towards the ancient Japanese aesthetic of  Wabi-Sabi, which is the beauty of  things unconventional, modest and humble.

My sculptures are the opposite of the predictability and uniformity of  manufactured goods.  Created with recycled and repurposed materials they display a strength of character.  The work asks you to slow down and contemplate the exceptional beauty of rustic, primitive surfaces and natural objects. 

There is a state of grace and peacefulness you can arrive at through the appreciation of the Wabi-Sabi aesthetic, the strength that comes from an acceptance of the cycle of life and the understanding that everything always changes.

Mixed Media Symbols for Well-Being

Anthropology gave me the opportunity to study different cultures and their sacred symbols. Symbols have a profound effect on all of us. The symbols I use with my artwork are all positive in nature. They support healing, inner peace, and happiness to come into your life.  

                        

The Healer's Hand mixed media work above, also known as the Shaman's Hand, is an ancient symbol of healing and protection. The Healer's Hand originates from Native Americans of the Southwest. This symbol is known for its therapeutic and curative energy. Displaying this symbol in your home also brings good health, good luck and happiness.
